Working with a tiny footprint, Burringbar Natural Wine Shop is full of functionality. Conceived as a boutique shop focusing on interesting wines, craft beers and a careful curation of products and deli ingredients, it was integral to put the food and drinks at the heart.

 

The owners came from the music industry, but have a passion for wine and beer, and wanted to create a space with the local community in mind.  

 

The biggest challenge whitewood had to overcome with the design was just how small the space is, flanked on two sides with glass. Making the most of the height, floor-to-ceiling wine racks add the necessary storage but also create a strong visual element within the space through the linear black frame. The existing gridded glass shop front is reinforced in the shelving system, connecting inside and out.

 

The material palette is pared back and simple, dark timbers are offset by a dark plum colour – a nod to wine. Spotlighting the product was important and track lighting allows the bottles to be lit up as desired, while also making the interior feel moody. The floors are a speckled epoxy with deep browns and greys, adding to the earth tones throughout.

 

A judicious amount of spotted gum timber in vertical battens on the counter have been stained darker to bring out the richness of the wood. The warmth of the timber also speaks to the homey feeling and its hinterland location.

 

With wine tastings, and some window seats, Brooklyn Tasting Room is all about bringing the locals together. Through clever design, every corner of the space was able to be utilised.
