The Feros Arcade has been a mainstay of Byron Bay for many years but was losing foot traffic. Add into the mix that online shopping has continued to change retail and the way people shop, and the run-down, traditional-style strip mall was ready to be revitalised.

whitewood worked together with the clients, who were first-time developers, to create a design that not only modernised the Feros Arcade but would also see it remain timely well into the future. In order to achieve this we carefully selected materials for their wear and tear, within an overall atmosphere that feels decidedly modern.

Using Byron Bay as a source of inspiration, the recently completed Feros Arcade captures the natural aesthetics of the seaside town. Fresh and harmonious, the arcade features a mix of soft materiality including various timbers, together with natural limestone pavers across the ground and low-VOC paints.

Lighting plays an important role throughout Feros Arcade and comes to life through a series of both natural and artificial executions. To bring natural light into the arcade corridors, all the existing skylights were upgraded with clear UV protected safety glass, lined with white VJ  cladding. For artificial lighting, the central courtyard space has ambience and charm with a series of festoon lights. Inside, clean and minimal up/down lights line the columns while at the Jonson St entry large statement pendants subtly reference the string lights outside in a more geometric manner.

Not only did we completely refresh the base building and common areas, including way-finding and signage elements, but we also designed majority of the shopfronts within the precinct creating a cohesive look. This holistic approach has ensured a consistent aesthetic has been achieved throughout.

Wanting to give something back to the community of Byron Bay, we commissioned a selection of murals. Each one has come to life by the Byron based artist, Brian Connolly, creating another touch point of inspiration from the very town itself. The new design of Feros Arcade is typified by a thoughtful design approach that truly showcases the identity of Byron Bay.
