Lennox Pizza, a beloved staple in Lennox Head, has recently relocated to the heart of the main street in Lennox. The pizza shop, known for its surf and skate culture, has been a part of the community for 16 years and has now found a new home in a completely revamped space. The goal of the renovation was centred on creating a space for people to hang out, a notion that aligns with the core ethos of the local institution.

The design of the new Lennox Pizza location brings in the essence of the brand's surf/skate culture, with an industrial and raw feel. The booth seat area has a curved shape, a design reference to skate parks with wrapped concrete. The main dining space features an art wall with pieces the owner has collected over the years, as well as a personal touch with signed surfboards and posters that have been integrated into the design.

The materials used throughout were carefully selected to create a hardy space that will age well over time. The cabinetry is made of spotted gum to bring a touch of warmth and nostalgia, while a bright neon light sits strikingly on a gloss black tiled wall. To add to the rawness, the lighting fixtures all give a nod to an industrial flavour with exposed conduit. Nothing is too polished.

The space also features an alfresco dining area with a statement mural, as well as a custom, green-tinted concrete bench. Out here it’s all about ocean views so it was critical to have everything be weather and salt hardy.

Set with the task of designing to create a sense of community where people can hang out and linger, a large, shared dining table can be turned into a pool table later in the night.

The use of authentic features, such as an exposed brick wall, was important to the client to align with the brand's ethos. From the street, there is a visual hint of what lays inside with the exposed bricks peeking out, which sits juxtaposed against the clean crisp exterior of the building’s external architecture. Walking up the stairs and into Lennox Pizza is when the shift starts to happen, mostly notably in details like the way the flooring is darker once inside, with the floor brick then wrapping up to create the seat base.

In the bar area, the green tiles on the front create a subtle reference to the green concrete in the front seating area, and also forms part of the new brand colours. Other details add to the overall grungey cool aesthetic, such as brass edges on the spotted gum table, and the suspended brass gantries. While lighting throughout is about creating different kinds of texture, for instance with LED lights behind the bar that reflect the black tiles with a subtle glimmering tone.

The new home of Lennox Pizza is aligned with the brand's core ethos of surf/skate culture, and creates a space for people to hang out and enjoy delicious pizza. The attention to detail and use of authentic features ensures that the space will age well and continue to be a beloved institution in the community for years to come.
